Breathing Pacemaker® Therapeutic Audio:
With Breathing Pacemaker® therapeutic audio, COHERENCE® introduces a formative "New Science of Breath®”. This new science offers an exciting approach to health enhancement through optimal breathing. It is based on the premise that while at rest the adult cardiopulmonary system, inclusive of autonomic nervous system aspects, resonates at a specific frequency, this frequency being essentially the same for all adults. When the breathing cycle is aligned with this frequency, it results in optimal autonomic nervous system balance. Autonomic balance yields peace of mind, mental and physical comfort, a positive emotional outlook, and enhanced health and well being. For yoga enthusiasts, when combined with relaxation and stillness, breathing at this “Fundamental Quiescent Rhythm®” automatically results in deep meditation. You can experience this rhythm in an instructive format by clicking here (requires RealPlayer).
Breathing Pacemaker® therapeutic audio products promote a specific physical breathing modality. (While some recordings have psychoacoustic qualities, the principal action is not psychoacoustic.) They may be used for “formal” breathing or meditation practice, as an antidote for acute stress, and as a soothing background “reference rhythm” during normal daily activity. All are intended to be listened to at a relatively low volume. Most recordings repeat seamlessly on many MP3 players. Use is explained further down this page as well as on the detailed instructions you will receive with each purchase.
RealPlayer is required to play audio samples. MP3 files are typically 23-24MB in size. Depending on your connection speed they can take some time to download.
For legal reasons, it is necessary to present the purchaser with a "License and Warranty Agreement" that the purchaser must "accept" in order to cart each product. If you choose not to accept the terms of the agreement, you will be returned to this page. You may view the agreement in advance by clicking here. Thank you for your patience in this matter.

2. Clock & Tibetan Bell - Respire Track 1 (MP3): An antique mantle clock ticks 4 times per interval. The strike of a Tibetan bowl occurs coincident with every 5th tick, indicating when to begin inhalation or exhalation. (24:24), ~23MB. Price: $14.95
3. Tibetan Bell & Marimba - Respire Track 2 (MP3): The single strike of a Tibetan bell alternating in left and right channels is preceded with a short Marimba sequence. The strike of the bell indicates when to begin inhalation or exhalation. This recording facilitates group synchroni-zation. (24:24) ~23MB. Price: $14.95
4. Tibetan Bell & Chime - Respire Track 3 (MP3): The single strike of a deep Tibetan Bell alternating in left and right channels is preceded by a single small chime. The strike of the bell indicates when to begin inhalation or exhalation. This recording facilitates group synchroni-zation. (24:24) ~23MB Price: $14.95
5. Mountain Brook & Chime (MP3): Sounds of a babbling brook in a high altitude mountain meadow. A single chime fades in. The strike of the chime indicates when to begin inhalation or exhalation. This recording has slight wind noise and does not repeat seamlessly. (29:03) ~27MB. Price: $14.95
6. 4 Bells (MP3): 4 bells repeat in a melodic sequence every 5.88 seconds. Begin inhalation or exhalation coincident with every 4th strike. (24:24) ~22MB. Price: $14.95
7. Dusk Sounds (MP3): A chorus of crickets and peepers rises and falls. Changes are signaled by the call of a whippoorwil followed by silence. (24:30) ~22MB. Price: $14.95
8. Single Chime (MP3): A single chime repeats. The strike of the chime indicates when to begin inhalation or exhalation. (24:24) ~22MB. Price: $14.95
The average adult breathes at 15 breaths per minute or 1 cycle every 4 seconds. COHERENCE® asserts that this relatively rapid breathing frequency, while at rest, results in autonomic nervous system imbalance, specifically “over-activation” of the sympathetic (fight or flight) branch and “under-activation” of the parasympathetic (calm and relaxation) branch. There is an emerging understanding in the medical community that "sympathetic dominance" underlies many modern day maladies including anxiety and hypertension. Click here for a comprehensive discussion of the science behind the products.
The Breathing Pacemaker® is a simple audio device that presents you with an ~12 second interval to which you consciously synchronize your breathing. The basic 12 second interval is divided into two 6 second sub-intervals for the purpose of synchronizing both inhalation and exhalation. This is explained further in the detailed instructions provided with the purchase of each product.
Different audio recordings employ various instruments and sounds to indicate when to change from inhalation to exhalation, or visa versa. Sound is also utilized to indicate the progression of the breathing interval so you have a clear understanding of how the interval is progressing in time. This is important because we are interested in breathing at a rate that is as close as possible to the optimal frequency, this being 1 complete cycle in 11.76 seconds.
Certain pacemaker products also clearly distinguish between inhalation and exhalation phases such that 2 or more people can synchronize their breathing rhythms to the same pacemaker reference. When used in this fashion, the Fundamental Quiescent Rhythms of 2 or more people literally synchronize with each other. Because the Fundamental Quiescent Rhythm® is a basic human electrical rhythm, this results in the synchronizing of electromagnetic fields. A physical analogy of this is 2 or more strings vibrating at exactly the same frequency and phase.
Psychoacoustic characteristics of the sounds (other than rhythm), are not important to pacemaker functioning.
Initial products are offered in digital audio compact disk (CD) and MP3 format. Except where noted, all recordings start and end such that they can be looped with minimal break in audio.
Detailed instructions are provided with the purchase of each product.
